The ongoing human rights violations overlap greatly with our organization's mission due to increased risk of trafficking that occurs when people are trying to flee violence en masse.
Women and children make up the vast majority of those seeking refuge, and these are also the most vulnerable groups in terms of trafficking (UN). Some examples of how traffickers take advantages of these situation are:
- Illegitimate Transportation: amidst the chaos, it can be very difficult to verify that the vehicles offering to transport refugees are actually operated by well-intentioned individuals
- Illegitimate Safe Houses: similar to the case with transportation, it's hard to know when the houses are run by safe people. Imagine trying to navigate the situation yourself- what proof could the people running a "safe house" provide to prove to you that is in fact where you want to be?
